quiz 3 Flashcards
Give one disadvantage of mechanical valves
There is a risk of blood clots forming and patients have to take medication that prevent those blood clots
To which part of the body does the right ventricle pump blood?
to the lungs
What is the function of the heart?
to pump blood around the body
What are the 3 main cell types carried by plasma in the blood?
red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets
What are the coronary arteries?
Blood vessels that supply the heart muscle tissue with blood
Give 2 reasons why a red blood cell has a biconcave shape
Easier to move through blood vessels and increases the surface area
How are arteries adapted to cause high blood pressure?
They have a narrow lumen
Name 4 substances dissolved in plasma in the blood
glucose,urea,enzymes and carbon dioxide
What are the 3 types of blood vessels?
arteries,veins and capillaries
What occurs in coronary heart disease?
The coronary arteries become blocked with fatty deposits, narrowing them
What type of blood flows through the right side of the heart?
Deoxygenated blood
What is the component of blood called that carries all of the blood cells in it?
plasma
Give a major challenge of heart transplantation.
the scarcity of available donor hearts and the long period of recovery
Describe the function of the vein
carry deoxygenated blood( except pulmonary vein) towards the heart
How can coronary heart disease cause heart attacks
less blood reaches cardiac(heart) muscle, so less glucose and oxygen reaches cardiac muscle. so cardiac muscles respire less and so less energy is released to contract, which can result in a heart attack
