Qualitative research: grounded theory Flashcards
grounded theory
where theory is grounded in the data collected from the study
definition of grounded theory
qualitative research method which studies peoples experience with a process and create a theory of how that process works
the theory generated in this research
is only from the data collected in the study and not from outside sources e.g. literature
grounded theory is used to answer research questions when
there are no other existing theories or only limited theories regarding the process thats of interest
e.g. there is no theory about process of becoming a regular smoker at school
recruitment
theoretical sampling
theoretical sampling
researchers recruit participants who have gone through the process of interest
using those who have gone through the process of interest
helps develop a well-rounded theory
which method is used for data collection
interviews
how many interview
20-30
questions asked in the interview (4)
what was the process ? core phenomenon
what influence the phenomena to occur? causal conditions
what actions taken in response to core phenomenon? strategies
what were the outcome of the strategies? cosequence
what was the process?

consequences
which factors are important to consider when development a theory
core phenomena, causal conditions, strategies, consequences
three parts of data analysis
1) open coding
2) axial coding
3) selective coding
open coding
first stage
-read through transcript and determine different categories that are in the data
what is open coding finished
when no new categories are emerging from the data
coding
circle a chunk of text and label with a category name which fits in
axial coding
researchers use codes and memos to show how each category relates to each other–> forming the theory
axial coding involves
forming a theory by assessing how categories such as core phenomenon, causal conditions, strategies and consequences are connected
axial coding is represented using
logic models
selective coding
researchers write a story about how the theories explain the core processes
discriminant sampling
if theory is accurate
recruitment of new group (who are similar to the original participants)
-researchers ask the same questions to determine if new participants experiences with the process is similar to the theory
it may be hard to recruit people
depending on the process of interest
grounded theory can be
very time consuming
researcher also may add their own bias by
choosing categories in coding
small sample of participants
may not be representative of everyones experiences around the world
