ethnography definition
is qualitative research of a distinct groups culture
ethnographic studies
the culture (values, beliefs, behaviours, language) of a distinct group within society
culture includes
values, beliefs, behaviours and language
usually distinct groups
have been together over an extended period of time and have similar beliefs, attitudes, behaviours and languages
where does ethnography originate from
anthropology
examples of ethnographic research questions
- what is the culture of….?
- what is it like to be part of ….?
how is data collected during ethnographic research
1) find distance cultural group within society
2) gain entry to group through gate keepers
3) become emersed in the everyday lives of the group 9in the filed) for an extended period of time
4) data normally in the form of observations and interviews
how many people used to collected data
around 20 or more people of the group they are interested in
how is data analysed in ethnographic research
researchers immerse themselves into field notes, interview transcripts, etc to discover MAJOR THEMES which describe the groups culture
final report
thick, rich descriptions, allowing reader to experience the culture without having been there
how is the final report usually written
as a narrative
however ethnographic studies ar every
time consuming, since to understand the culture a prolonged period of time has to be spent in the filed
narrative reports may eb difficult
for those not sue to writing in this way
researchers in ethnographic studies are at risk of
‘going native’
- compromising their duty as an objective researcher
researcher presence and lack of ethical consideration
may negatively impact culture
