(Q2) Physiognomy: Proportions of Human Form Flashcards
Morphology
The study of form without regard to function
Norms
Typical size, shape, location of facial features
Normal expectancy
Proportion
Comparative measurements of different parts of a whole
Deviation
Standard departure from the norm, not a deformity
All people have some deviations
Anomaly
Extreme deviation/malformation of a feature
Projection
A feature that extends outward
Recession
A withdraw from a position (not a depression)
Inclination
Slant, slope, angle
Convex
Outward curvature
Concave
Inward curvature
The face
- Symmetrical
- Bi lateral curvature: two sides, the same on each side
Facial curvatures
Oval, angular, round, square
* differences in cheeks jaw and forehead
Curvatures of the forehead
Central
Lateral
Temple
Categorical head shapes
Oval
Round
Square
Oblong
Triangle
Inverted triangle
Diamond
Forms of the profile
- curvatures of the face when looking from the side
Vertical
Convex
Concave - forehead first, chin second
Convex/concave
Concave/convex
Vertical/convex
Vertical/concave
Convex/vertical
Concave/vertical
Halves of the face
- Crown of the head to line of eye closure
- line of eye closure to base of chin
Thirds of the face (vertical)
- Hairline to eyebrow
- Eyebrow to base of nose
- Base of nose to base of chin
Bottom third of the face/
- Base of nose to line of lip closure
- line of lip closure to labiomental sulcus
- labiomental sulcus to base of chin
Middle third of the face
- Superior margin of the ear aligns with the eyebrow (think of how glasses sit on your face)
- Inferior margin of the ear aligns with the base of the nose
Fifths of the face
The width of the face is five eyes wide between the zygomatic arches.
- equal to the width between inner corners of each eye
Supplemental equalities
Features of the face that are equal/similar in measurement
- Lateral edge of eye closure to external auditory meatus is equal to 1/3 of the face length
- Distance of the center of the eyes equals the width of the mouth
- Distance between the medial corners of the eyes is equal to the width of the nasal wings
- distance of two arches equals eyebrow to base of the chain equals tip of the nose to the ear canal
Diamond Face Shape
- The cheekbones are the widest point and the face features a more angled and pointed chin.
- The forehead will also angle upwards at the sides
Heart Face Shape
a wide, rounded forehead, but an angular, pointed chin
Inverted Triangle Face Shape
Angular for head, angular jaw, pointed chin (more pointed than heart shaped)
Rectangle Face Shape
- The forehead, cheeks, and Joel, with or equal width, and the length is longer than it is wide.
- The sides of the face or flatter as compared to the facial shapes with rounded features, and the jar is angular or squarer
Round Face Shape
- The vertical distance and the width between the cheek bones are equal
- The chin and cheeks are rounded
- The cheeks are the widest point of the face
- Also called infantine face
Oblong Face Shape
Forhead cheeks and jaw are the same width
the sides of the face and jaw are more rounded
Oval Face Shape
- Similar to a round face, but it is longer than it is wide
- Most common facial shape
Square Face Shape
- Vertical and horizontal measurements are equal, but instead of having rounded cheeks and jawline, the face has flat sides and a more angle jaw
- They also have a straight hairline
- The strong facial shape
Triangle Face Shape
- The forehead is pointed, and the sides widen, the jaw is the widest point
- May have close set eyes
- Least common head shape
Concave Profile
Forhead is prominent or protruding, as well as a prominent chin
- Features create an inward curvature or concavity
- Least common facial profile
Vertical or Plane Profile
Forehead, chin and, lips all project to an imaginary line
- Very little curvature to their profile
Convex-Concave Profile
Fore head recedes backwards or posteriorly, and the chin is prominent or protruding
Convex-Vertical/ Plane Profile
Forehead recedes backwards or posteriorly and the chin protrudes to an imaginary line and is flat
Concave-Convex Profile
Forehead is prominent or protruding and the chin recedes posteriorly
Concave-Vertical/Plane
Forehead is prominence or protruding in the chain projects to an imaginary line and is flat
Vertical/Plane-Convex Profile
Forehead projects to an imaginary line and is flat and the chin recedes posteriorly
Vertical/Plane-Concave Profile
For head protrude to an imaginary line, and the chin is prominent or protruding
Convex Profile
Forehead, receding, or sloping posteriorly from there brown line
Chin recedes backwards or posteriorly
- May have a more prominent brow
- Most common facial profile
