Purposes of ATS & Division of Airspace Flashcards
What do Air Navigation Services comprise?
ATM - Air Traffic Management
CNS - Communication, Navigation and Surveillance systems
MET - Meteorological services for air navigation
SAR - Search and Rescue
AIS - Aeronautical Information Service
What determines the need for ATS provision?
The types of air traffic involved.
The density of air traffic.
The meteorological conditions.
Such other factors as may be relevant.
What types of ATS are there?
Air Traffic Control Service.
Air Traffic Advisory Service.
Flight Information Service.
Alerting Service.
What are the objectives of ATS?
Prevent collisions between aircraft
Prevent collisions between aircraft on the maneuvering area and obstructions on that area.
Expedite and maintain an orderly flow of air traffic.
Provide advice and information useful for the safe and efficient conduct of flights.
Provide an Alerting Service
What are the objectives of ATC?
Preventing collisions:
Between aircraft
On the maneuvering area between aircraft and obstructions.
Expediting and maintaining an orderly flow of air traffic.
In which airspace is an ATC service provided?
To all IFR flights in airspace Classes A, B, C, D and E.
To all VFR flights in airspace Classes B, C and D.
To all special VFR flights.
To all aerodrome traffic at controlled aerodromes.
What is a ‘Controlled aerodrome’?
An aerodrome at which an ATC service is provided regardless of whether a CTZ exists.
What is Aerodrome traffic?
All traffic on the manoeuvring area of an aerodrome and all aircraft flying in the vicinity of an aerodrome.
What is Aerodrome vicinity traffic?
An aircraft operating in the vicinity of an aerodrome includes but is not limited to aircraft entering or leaving an aerodrome traffic circuit.
What is needed for the operation of an ATC service?
Information on the intended movement and actual progress of each aircraft.
The relative positions of known aircraft to each other.
Clearances and information for the purpose of preventing collision between aircraft and maintaining and expediting an orderly flow of traffic.
Coordination of clearances:
Whenever an aircraft might otherwise conflict with traffic operated by other units.
Before transferring control of an aircraft to other units.
What is the objective of an air traffic advisory service?
The objective of the air traffic advisory service is to make information on collision hazards more effective than it would be in the mere provision of flight information service.
Where is an air traffic advisory service provided?
Provided within advisory airspace/routes to ensure separation between IFR aircraft, where Air Traffic Control is insufficient.
What is an FIR?
Flight Information Region
An airspace of defined dimensions within which flight information service and alerting service are provided.
What is an FIS?
Flight Information Service – FIS
A service provided for the purpose of giving advice and information useful for the safe and efficient conduct of flights.
Who is a FIS provided to?
All aircraft which are likely to be affected by the information and which are:
Provided with air traffic control service; or
Otherwise known to the relevant air traffic
services units.
