PUBLIC LAW L4 - Constitutions & Conventions - CONSTITUTIONS OF UK - PARLIAMENT Flashcards
1
Q
What is the UK parliament? (2)
A
It is the supreme legislative body of the UK. It can ‘make or unmake’ any law it wishes.
2
Q
What is the House of Lords? (2)
A
It is not elected and it may scrutinise and amend legislation approved by the House of Commons.
3
Q
How does the House of Lords link to primary legislation? (2)
A
Primary legislation requires approval by the House of Lords before Sovereign gives royal assent to become Acts of Parliament. If ‘government defeats’ in House of Lords when legislation is not accepted, this usually results in amendments to it by government rather than the whole defeat of the bill.
