PT Tests and Measures Flashcards
What are the 6 BMI classifications and how is it calculated?
BMI = weight(Kg)/height (m^2)
<18.5 underweight 18.5-24.9 normal 25-29.9 overweight 20-34.9 Obesity (class 1) 35-39.9 Obesity (class 2) > 40 Extreme Obesity (class 3)
what is the time it takes the capillary bed to refill after it is occluded by pressure?
Capillary refill time
What is capillary refill time an indicator of?
impaired perfusion to the extremities
What are the 3 steps for capillary refill time?
How is it interpreted?
- apply firm pressure over a nail bed or bony prominence until nail or skin blanches
- release pressure
- observe time for skin or nail bed to regain full color
Interpretation
Normal: full color returns in < 2 seconds
Abnormal: refill time > 2 seconds, indcates capillary blood flow is compromised
What does the Claudication Test testing for?
peripheral artery disease
What is the procedure for the Claudication Test?
Walk on flat track at max speed OR
walk on treadmill at 2.0 mph at constant grade between 0-12%
What is the Initial Claudication Distance vs. the Absolute Claudication Distance?
Initial: pain-free walking distance
Absolute: max distance walked when test is terminated due to pain
What is the Grading scale for claudication pain?
Grade 1: definite discomfort or pain, but only of initial or modest levels
Grade 2: moderate discomfort or pain from which the patients attention can be diverted
Grade 3: intense pain from which the patients attention cannot be diverted
Grade 4: excruciating and unbearable pain
Where is the obstruction occuring with pain in the following?
- buttock, hip, or thigh
- calf
- ankle
- buttock, hip, or thigh: obstruction of aorta or iliac arteries
- calf: stenosis of femoral and popliteal arteries
- ankle: disease of tibial or peroneal arteries
What is an uncomfortable awareness of breathing?
Dyspnea
what is ONE way to rate dyspnea?
Borg dyspnea scale 1-10
What test attempts to detect deep vein thrombosis in the lower leg?
Homan’s Sign for Deep Vein Thrombosis
How is Homan’s Sign performed and what is positive?
passively dorsiflex the foot and ankle with knee straight
Positive: pain in the calf or popliteal space
What is the act of tapping the surface of the body to identify areas of altered density?
mediate percussion
What are the 4 sounds of percussion and how do they progress?
progress form tissues of high density to tissues of low density
- Flat or dull
- Resonance
- Hyperresonance
- Tympany
