Where are blood pressures taken with the ABI and how is it calculated?

A

measured in both brachial arteries and both tibialis posterior arteries

Calculated by dividing the higher of the two blood pressure measurements in the ankles by the hihger of two systolic measurements in the arms. SO FOOT/ARM

What are the 5 different ratings of ABI and what do they mean?

A

> 1.3 rigid arteries and need for ultrasound to check for PAD
1.0-1.3 normal
0.80-0.99 mild blockage, beginning of PAD
0.40-0.79 moderate blockage, may have intermittent claudication
<0.4 severe blockage, claudication pain at rest
