Psychology C3 - methods used to improve adherence Flashcards
Using lifestyle changes to improve adherence
using lifestyle changes to improve adherence
-adherence = replace unhealthy behaviours with healthy ones
- reduction in stress
-stress can undermine adherence, lower motivations, feels as though there is no point in changing behaviour
-instead of targeting adherence, interventions should aim to help manage stress
-example, therapists give clients skills to cope
- improved self-esteem and self-confidence
-some people lack confidence, obese people may have tried physical exercise but lost ‘little weight’ - feel bad about themselves, lose confidence
- emotional resilience
-those who are emotionally resilient ‘bounce back’ from setbacks - go through troubles - more likely to adhere
-APA 2012 recommends increasing resilience by developing positive relationships, positive outlook, mindfulness
- insight into own behaviour
-habits = prevent
-overcome this is to help person become aware of habits - recognise as ‘mindless’
-gain insight into behaviour
- improved outlook on life
-optimistic = positive outlook
-hopeful even when life is challenging - think about good future
-likely to adhere, focus on positive changes
benefits are cumulative
(evaluation)
+
-several lifestyles - related factors for interventions
-factors = linked, addressing one affects others – benefit ‘add together’
-example, improving outlook, become optimistic - experience less stress
-making one change has a positive knock on effect
vicious cycle
(evaluation)
-
-addressing lifestyle factors = not enough
-example, stressed clients drop out of support
-Michelini et al. - obese people with high stress gave up support programmes early – vicious cycle, can’t stick with treatments
-adherence must be addressed directly
