Psychology C3 - maintenance of behavioural change Flashcards
lack of support
lack of support
-less likely to adhere to medical advice when we don’t have help from other people
significant others – practical support
-without a social network, person has no one to remind them to take medication, take them to appointments, show them how to access exercise videos, etc.
significant others – emotional support
-adherence = less likely when client lacks people who can improve their mood, or encouragement
-can be negative
-lack of support produces better outcomes for someone who needs to follow advice, rely on support from professionals
health professionals – practical support
-main type of support provided by health professionals = informational
-health professionals = experts on the benefits of adherence, so a lack of information from them can lead to non-adherence.
health professionals – emotional support
-expect professionals to provide emotional support
-may be a ‘gap’ between amounts of support clients expect and is actually provided
-perception of support = key factor
-don’t trust professional or communication = poor, perceive lack of emotional support
support for effectiveness
(evaluation)
+
-range of evidence showing that lack of support = linked to non-adherence
-adherence = lower in people living alone, get older and have cognitive impairments
-homeless people, those living in unstable environments and people with mental health issues = risk of non-adherence (Wheeler et al. 2014)
-lack of support = effective explanation of non-adherence
limited effectiveness
(evaluation)
-
-support from professionals = one facts influencing non-adherence
-non-adherence = widespread and costly in terms of ill health and finances
-interventions only address one factor at a time
-suggests support isn’t enough on its own to improve adherence significantly
