psychology as a science debate Flashcards
what are the two reasons for psychology is a science
-highly standardised research
-often conducted as a lab experiment so it is easy to manipulate variables and establish cause and effect
what are the two reasons against psychology as a science
-not all studies are carried out in controlled conditions so they lack standardisation
-they dont all use lab experiments
why is freuds study unscientific
it is subjective. interviews and conversations were interpretated according to freuds psychosexual theory of development and leading questions were also used. Freud also collected qualatative data instead of quantatative
why is chaneys study unscientific
a field experiment where the children used inhalers in their home. The behaviour of the parents around inhaler use could be very different meaning a lack of consistency aswell as low control of extraneous variables
why is pilliavans study unscientific
it is a field experiment so it is harder to establish cause and effect as it is difficult to see if there is extraneous varibles
why is banduras study scientific
manipulation of independant variable so able to establish cause and effect
1)aggressive or none aggressive role model
2)same sex model and child
why is loftus and palmers study scientific
loftus and palmers study is highly standardised with controlled variables for example the same 7 clips
why is milgrams study scientific
standardised procedures make this study scientific because each of the participants have the same experience. Each experimenter had standardised prods such as “please continue” and “please go on”
what are the two reasons for psychology as a science
research is highly standardised
often conducted as a lab experiment
