Freud Flashcards
what is the super ego
the morality principle / concscience/ influenced by your parents
what is the ego
the reality principle which balances the super ego and ID
what is the ID
instincts and desires which is the pleasure principle
what is the oedipus complex
during the phallic stage a boy develops an intense sexual love for his mother
he sees his father as a rival and wants to get rid of him
the father however is more powerful and so the child develops a fear that he will be castrated
the child cannot live in a constant state of anxiety and so develops a defence mechanism and displaces this fear onto somthing else in order to cope with it
what is the aim of freuds study
documented the case of little hans to show how his fears dreams and fantasies were symbolic of his unconsious passing through the phallic stage of psychosexual development
what is the design and method
A longitudinal case study documenting hans fears from age 3-5
what is the sample
little Hans who was 5 years old
describe the “widdler” event and freuds analysis of it
compared his “widdler” to other peoples
this was the phallic stage of psychosexual development
describe the seduction attempt and the analysis
asked his mum “why dont you put your finger there?”
Hans is in freuds phallic stage of development and focus is on the genitals because this is the erogenous zone from which pleasure is derived at this age
Describe the fear of the bath scenario
was jealous of his sister as he wants his mother to himself so his fear of water is linked to him wanting his siter to fall under the water and drown
more acceptable to be scared of water than to admit you want to kill your sister
describe the fear of horses scenario
Freud says the horse reminded Hans of his dad with the dark bits around his mouth (moustache)and his blinkers by the horses eyes (glasses)
Hans heard his father say a horse would bite his finger which he linked to castration
describe the fantasy of the crumpled giraffe
interpreated as being sexual and about the odepius complex
When Hans sits on the small giraffe he claims it too himself
the small giraffe is his mother
describe the fantasy of the plumber
Hans wanted a bigger behind and widdler from the plumber
identification, the resolution of the odepius complex as Hans wishes to be like his father
Horse phobia had began to dissapear as he no longer needed to be afraid of his father
Describe the resolution scenario
The parenting resolution of oedipus complex
Pretend to play seems to allow him to fulfil his wish to be with his mother and still have his father present
What did Freud conclude his study of Hans supported
1)His theory of psychosexual development
2)his suggestion that boys in the phallic stage experience the oedpius complex
3)the nature of phobias and how they are unconsious anxiety displaced elsewhere
4)his use of psychoanalytic therapy to treat disturbed thoughts
