ethics debate Flashcards
how does milgrams study have poor ethics
3 participants had seizures, this shows how the conflict they felt between obeying the experimenter and their own sense of morals caused an extreme reaction. As this information was published it may put people off wanting to take part in research in the future
how does pilliavans study have poor ethics
the p’s were passangers on a New York subway so they were completely unaware that a study was taking place. They were captive on a train for 7 and a half mins whilst the drunk or ill victim staggard forward and collapsed. So even if they wanted to leave the situation they could not removing the right to withdraw
for poor ethics
one benefit of breaking the ethical guidlines within psychology is that is allows research to understand how people react in extreme situations
against poor ethics
if there is no protection from harm within research it can be argued that the psychologists have shown a lack of responsibilty towards the participants. This may stop them wanting to get involved
how does milgrams study support good ethics
it was clear that participants did not want to continue giving electric shocks but felt they had to obey the authority figure. Although the participants were distressed it allowed milgram to understand how authority figures can influence people to go against their own morals
how does pilliavans study support good ethics
lack of informed consent increase ecological validity. The results were free from demand characteristics and the behaviour shown is high in validity
for good ethics
participants who lack informed consent that are being studied increases ecological validity. As p’s are unaware they are in a study their behaviour is more natural
against good ethics
however this then removes their right to withdraw in any research if there isnt fully informed consent then p’s cannot make a fully informed decision to stay
