Psychology As A Science Flashcards
Define hypothesis testing
Prediction made about how participants are expected to behave (based on psychological theories)
Can be tested through research
Define manipulation of variables
When the IV is manipulated (changed) to see what effect this has on the DV
Describe quantifiable measurements
Use of numerical data. Can compare between conditions. Should be observable and objective
Define the study of cause and effect
Researcher can show that one variable is causing a change in another variable (behaviour)
Define falsifiability
The ability, in principle, to prove a claim wrong
Define replicability
The ability to repeat a study and test to see if its findings are reliable
Define objectivity
A claim is a matter of fact rather than an opinion
Define induction
Empirical research carried out. Theory then developed to make sense of findings
Define deduction
Theory is developed. Then empirical research carried out to see if theory is correct
Define control
Imposed on experiments. Ensure results due to IV and not extraneous variables
Define standardisation
Test conditions kept the same for all participants
