Inferential statistics Flashcards
what does p<0.05 mean
there is a less than 5% that the results are due to chance. therefore the data is significant, and the alternative hypothesis can be accepted
name 5 inferential statistics test you must know how to use
chi-square, binomal sign test, Mann-Whitney U-test, Wilcoxon signed ranks, Spearmans Rho
when to use Chi-Square
independent measures + nominal data
(INCH)
when to use Binomial Sign
Repeated/matched participants + nominal data
(RnB)
when to use Mann-Whitney U-test
independent measures + ordinal
(ION)
when to use Wilcoxon signed ranks
repeated measures/matched participants + ordinal
(ROW)
when to use spearmans Rho
correlation study + ordinal
what measures is related data
matched participants + repeated measures (use same statistical tests)
what measures is unrelated data
independent measures
describe the relationship between calculated value + critical value for Chi-squared + Spearmans Rho
in order to accept the alternative hypothesis the calculated value must be higher than the critical value
describe the relationship between calculated value + critical value
in order to accept the alternative hypothesis the calculated value must be lower than the critical value
rhyme to remember when alternative hypothesis should be accepted (in relation to critical value)
Chi is high and so is Rho, the rest are low
what are the three criteria required for a researcher to use a parametric test
- interval or ratio level data
- a normal distribution of data
- similar variances between results from the different conditions)
what do parametric tests measure
they analyse raw individual scores (from interval/ratio level data_)
