What is anoerixa nervosa?
A syndrome in which the person maintains a low body weight as a result of a preoccuptation with weight, construcucted as either a fear of fatness or a pursuit of thinness
What is bulimia nervosa?
Characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating and compensatory behaviour (vomiting, fastin or excessive exercise) in order to prevent weight gain
What are atypical eating disorders?
Closely resemble anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa but do not meet precise diagnostic critera for them
What is more prevalant, anorexia or bulimia?
Bulimia is 5 times more common that anorexia
How is a diagnosis made of an eating disorder?
Made on the basis of the history and suggestive clinical features
Why are eating disorders difficult to detect in primary care?
People are slow to present and may only do so when persuaded by concerned family members or friends
What are some of the symptoms of an eating disorder?
Fatigue, dizziness, lack of energy, physical complications associated with starvation, purging and vomiting
