The unconscious
Basic concept, lot of theories that started with Freud. Common thread:
- Experience and actions are influenced by psychological processes that are not part of our conscious awareness
- these processes are kept out of awareness in order to avoid psychological pain.
Fantasy
Play important role acc. to this type of therapy. Relate to external experience and reationships w others.
Primary and secondary processes
Prim: No distinct betw. past, present, future. Begins at birth.
Sec: fucntioning associated w consciousness. Logical, orderly
Defense
Defense mechanisms to avoid emotional pain:
Intellectualization (talking about threatening siutation while keeping emotional distance)
Projection (Attributing threat to other person)
Reaction formation (Denies and claim you feel opposite)
Splitting (Kleinian theory: Avoid perception of negative in someone seen as positive, therefore splitting into two images (infants))
Transference
Transfering a template from the past onto the present situation
