  • Experience and actions are influenced by psychological processes that are not part of our conscious awareness
  • these processes are kept out of awareness in order to avoid psychological pain.

Defense

A

Defense mechanisms to avoid emotional pain:

Intellectualization (talking about threatening siutation while keeping emotional distance)

Projection (Attributing threat to other person)

Reaction formation (Denies and claim you feel opposite)

Splitting (Kleinian theory: Avoid perception of negative in someone seen as positive, therefore splitting into two images (infants))
