Definition of psychosis
Loss of contact with reality (delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech/behavior)
Positive symptoms of psychosis
Presence of things that should not be there: delusions, hallucinations, illusions and disorganization of thought
Negative symptoms of psychosis
Absence of things that should be there: apathy (lack of novelty), anhedonia (lack of interest), a logia (lack of speech detail) and affective flattening (robotic)
6 subtypes of delusions
1) Paranoid 2) Somatic 3) Sexual 4) Religious 5) Nihilistic (dying) 6) Grandiose
4 types of hallucinations
1) Visual 2) Tactile (bugs) 3) Olfactory 4) Auditory
4 types of disorganization
1) Perseveration (same though over and over) 2) Loose associations (illogical thoughts) 3) Clanging (rhyming words) 4) Neologisms (made up words)
Criteria for diagnosis of schizophrenia
2+ symptoms for 6+ months: delusions, hallucinations, disorganization, negative symptoms
Schizophrenia characterized by a decline in function
Prodrome
Schizophrenia characterized by acute episodes
Psychotic
Schizophrenia characterized by less severe symptoms between episodes
Residual
Criteria for diagnosis of schizophreniform
Same as schizophrenia but < 6 months and > 1 month.
Criteria for diagnosis of brief psychotic disorder
1+ symptom 1 day to 1 month: delusions, hallucinations, disorganization or catatonic behavior
Area of brain associated with positive symptoms
Mesolimbic system due to increased DA activity
Area of brain associated with negative symptoms
Prefrontal cortex
Area of brain associated with increased prolactin secretion
Tubuloinfundibular (from DA blockade)
