Psychiatry-Interventional Psychiatry Flashcards
How does transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) work?
You put an electromagnet parallel to the hypoactive region of the brain. This stimulates electrical activity the region that has lower function to treat the patient’s condition.
What are chronic effects of rTMS (repetitive use)?
Increased BDNF. Long term potentiation with certain pulse sequences and long term inhibition with other pulse sequences.
Use for rTMS
Only cleared for MDD currently.
What are common adverse effects of vagal nerve stimulation?
Surgery and sleep apnea due to increased vagal tone.
Risky procedure approved for Parkinson’s, essential tremor and dystonia.
Deep brain stimulation, sits on globes pallidus.
Uses of ECT
MDD, BPD, Catatonia, Schizophrenia
Adverse effects of ECT
Retrograde (rarely can’t remember big events) and Anterograde amnesia.
