Physiology-Placebo Flashcards
1
Q
The improvement attributable to nonspecific aspects of treatment
A
Placebo effect
2
Q
Where are placebo effects most significant?
A
Where CNS has a large role in physiologic process
3
Q
An adverse placebo effect
A
Nocebo. Typically these are also CNS related (dry mouth, nausea etc)
4
Q
How does learning affect the placebo effect?
A
If you have had a previously positive experience you are primed to have a positive effect and the opposite for negative experiences.
5
Q
Is a group without a treatment control a placebo group? Why do you need this group?
A
No, people know they are not receiving any treatment. You need a no treatment control group to be able to tease out the placebo effect vs. the drug effect.
