What is pseudogout?
Damage to a joint causes formation of calcium pyrophosphate crystals
What are risk factors for pseudogout?
Old age, female, hyperparathyroidism, parathyroidectomy, IV fluids
What joint is commonly affected in pseudogout?
Knee
What will a polarised light microscopy of synovial fluid show?
Positive birefringent rhomboid crystals
What can X-rays show?
Soft-tissue calcium deposition
What is a differential diagnosis?
Osteoarthritis
How do you manage acute attacks?
Cool packs, rest, intra-articular steroids
How do you manage pseudogout?
NSAIDs, colchicine
How does pseudogout present?
Hot, swollen, tender joint. Might have recently injured the joint
What are potential complications?
Damage to the joint, loss of function over time
