What is osteomyelitits?
An inflammatory condition of bone caused by an infecting organism
What is the most common organism that causes OM?
S.aureus
What are risk factors for osteomyelitis?
Previous osteomyelitis, penetrating injury, IVDU, DM, HIV, Recent surgery, infection, sickle cell disease, RA, CKD
How might osteomyelitis present
Child with limp or reluctance to weight bear, non specific pain at site of infection, low grade fever, malaise + fatigue
What are some symptoms of acute OM?
Bone pain, tenderness, warmth, swelling, systemic symptoms
What are some symptoms of chronic OM?
Pain but less severe, minimal fever, fewer constitutional symptoms
What blood investigations could be raised?
WCC, ESR, CRP
What other blood investigation do you need to do?
Blood culture
What X-ray findings can show up in acute OM?
Osteopenia
What X-ray findings can show up in chronic OM?
Intramedullary scalloping, cavities, cloacae
What are common differential diagnoses?
Septic arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, transient synovitis
How do you manage osteomyelitis?
Antibiotics, supportive care, surgery
What are some potential complications?
Drug reactions, infection recurrence, fracture, amputation

Cierny-Mader and anatomical
