norms
rules, either implicit or explicit, that define acceptable behavior

folkways
less important norms that govern daily behavior; enforced by social approval
taboos
actions or behaviors that are strictly prohibited in a society due to their morally reprehensible nature
deviance
the violation of social norms
differential association theory
the more exposure one has to deviance, the more deviant one becomes
labeling theory
if a society labels you as deviant, you are more likely to act in deviant ways
structural strain
if one cannot reach their goals with the means available, one resorts to deviance to gain the resources that are needed
anomie
general and society-wide reduction of norms and moral order
conformity
the tendency to act, think, or believe similarly to others in a group
identification
the desire to be like all other members of a group
internalization
the act of adopting others’ values or beliefs as one’s own because they have an appreciation for them
collective behavior
behavior demonstrated by groups of people that is largely spontaneous, rapidly changing, and unrepresentative of societal norms
