stage 1: pre-conventional
no personal moral code, we adopt what our parents and authority tell us
substage 1: obedience and punishment avoidance
child obeys to avoid punishment
substage 2: individualism and self-interest
child begins to understand different people have different views. will do what is most beneficial to their own views
stage 2: conventional
we internalize the norms and morals of a group and authority
substage 3: conformity and expectations
we do goof in order to be seen as good and win approval
substage 4: need to uphold laws and social order
we uphold laws and rules to avoid guilt
stage 3: post-conventional
we learn that right and wrong are not black and white, they can be contextual and situational
substage 5: greater good
we become aware that individuals can be disadvantaged by the law
substage 6: universal ethics and justice-based laws
we develop our own sense of justice and morality, whether or not it fits the law
