Protect The Overhead Traffic Pattern Flashcards
(Glossary)
Overhead Maneuver
A series of predetermined maneuvers prescribed for aircraft (often in formation) for entry into the VFR traffic pattern and to proceed to a landing. An overhead maneuver is not an IFR approach procedure. An aircraft executing an overhead maneuver is considered VFR and the IFR flight plan is canceled when the aircraft reaches the “initial point” on the initial approach portion of the maneuver.
(3-10-12)
An aircraft conducting an overhead maneuver is ______ and what is canceled when the aircraft reaches the “initial point” on the initial approach portion of the maneuver?
> VFR
> the IFR flight plan is canceled when reaching the initial point
(AFI 13-204v3: 9.7)
Protection of 360 Overhead Pattern
Where the AOI contains specific climb-out instructions to protect the overhead pattern, controllers may use the phrase “EXECUTE LOCAL CLIMBOUT” for:
Locally assigned aircraft only.
(AOI 13-204: 4.2.2.3)
What phrase is used by tower to protect the overhead pattern from departing aircraft when an aircraft is in the overhead pattern?
“Maintain at or below 2,000’ MSL (or 500’ below overhead pattern altitude assignment) until departure end of runway”
(AOI 13-204: 4.2.3)
What altitude is the overhead traffic pattern?
2,500’ MSL
(AOI 13-204: 4.3.4)
What is 360-overhead pattern protection considered as?
A special procedure
