Approach Clearance

A

Authorization by ATC for a pilot to conduct an instrument approach. The type of instrument approach for which a clearance and other pertinent information is provided in the approach clearance when required.

Side Step Maneuver

A

A visual maneuver accomplished by a pilot at the completion of an instrument approach to permit a straight-in-landing on a parallel runway not more than 1,200’ to either side of the runway to which the instrument approach was conducted.

Clear an arriving aircraft to a clearance limit by specifying the following:

A

> name of fix or airport
route of flight
altitude instructions as follows:
-assigned altitude; or
-inustructions to vertically navigate on the STAR/FMSP or STAR/FMSP transition
issue holding instructions, EFC, and additional delay information as required
instructions regarding further communications as appropriate

Clearance Beyond Fix

What is included when issuing clearance beyond a fix?

A

> clearance limit or approach clearance
route of flight. Specify:
-clearance limit or approach clearance
-route of flight. Specify:
>complete details of the route (airway, route, course, fix(es), azimuth course, heading, arc, or vector)
>the phrase “via last routing cleared”. Use this phrase only when the most recently issued routing to the new clearance limit is valid and verbiage will be reduced.
-assigned altitude if different from present altitude
