What are PIREPable conditions?
>ceilings at or below 5,000’ >visibility at or less than 5 miles >thunderstorms and related phenomena >turbulence of moderate degree greater >icing of light degree or greater >wind shear >volcanic ash clouds >sulfur gases >braking action advisories

Approach Information
What information do you give when current information changes?
> type approach to be expected
runway if different from that to which the instrument approach is made
surface wind
ceiling and visibility if reported ceiling at the airport of intended landing is below 1,000’ or below the highest circling minimum, whichever is greater, or the visibility is less than 3 miles
altimeter setting for the airport of intended landing `
(AFI-204v3: 7.10)
Which end of the runway are wind sensors selected for?
The approach end of runway, unless an operational advantage will result from another setting.
(AFI-204v3: 8.3)
Where must current observations and pertinent severe weather warnings, advisories, and pilot reports be available?
At all controller positions
(OI 13-204: 4.10)
Who maintains the AFAS?
Automation personnel
(OI 13-204: 7.5)
Who will RAPCON pass all tornado/funnel cloud sightings received from airborne aircraft to?
> Red River tower
> Base weather
> Grand Forks tower
> Grand Forks flight service station
(OI 13-204: 7.5)
What is the minimum amount of information to pass when giving info on tornado or funnel cloud sightings?
> location
> general direction of movement
(.65: 2-6-(all)
What do you record with PIREPs
>time >aircraft position >type aircraft >altitude >icing -icing type and intensity -air temperature
(.65: 2-6-(all)
What terms are precipitation reported in?
> light
moderate
heavy
extreme
(.65: 2-6-(all)
What are calm wind conditions?
Wind less than 3 knots
(AFI-204v3: 7.10)
What do you do when wind displays are unavailable?
Issue wind information contained in the latest weather sequence, prefaced with “wind estimated”
(AFI-204v3: 7.10)
How do you read off ‘gusts’ for wind?
Ex:
“WIND TWO-TWO-ZERO AT ONE-FIVE, GUST TWO-SEVEN”
(Gusts are defined as a 10-minute peak wind speed only when that peak exceeds the wind speed lull by 10 knots or more
(AFI-204v3: 7.10)
Give an example of how to read off variable winds
“WIND THREE-ONE-ZERO AT ONE-FIVE, VARIABLE BETWEEN TWO-SEVEN-ZERO AND THREE-FOUR-ZERO”
(Variable wind is defined as a wind direction change of 60 degrees or more in the preceding 2 minutes, when the wind speed is greater than 6 knots.
(AFI-204v3: 7.10)
When do you issue gust spread?
When requested by the pilot.
(AFI-204v3: 7.10)
Give an example of how to give ‘gust spread’
“GUST SPREAD TWO-THREE”
Gust spread is defined as the difference between wind speed lull and wind speed peak during the preceding 10 minutes
