Proprioception Flashcards
Where are proprioception axons found?
Connective tissue of joints (capsules and ligaments etc)
What do proprioceptive axons do?
Respond to changes in angle, direction and velocity of movement of a joint. Also prevent excessive flexion, or extension.
Are proprioceptive axons fast or slow adapting and low or high threshold?
Mixture of all 4
What are the 4 nerve endings involved in proprioception?
Free nerve endings
Golgi type
Paciniform endings
Ruffini endings
What do free nerve endings do and where are they found?
Capsule and connective tissue
Most numerous
HT and SA – nociceptive function
What do golgi type endings do and where are they found?
Ligaments
HT and SA – protective role
What do Paciniform endings do and where are they found?
Periosteum near the articular attachments and the fibrous part of the joint capsule
LT and SA – acceleration detectors
What do Ruffini endings do and where are they found?
Joint capsule
LT and SA - static position and speed of movements
