What is consciousness?
Wakefulness with awareness of self and surroundings
What is clouding of consciousness?
Reduced wakefulness or self awareness without confusion.
What is confusion?
Bewilderment and misinterprets their surroundings
What is delirium?
State of confusion.
Often has visual hallucinations
What is a stupor?
Abnormal sleep state from which the subject cannot be raised normally but can with painful stimuli.
What is a coma?
Unrousable and unresponsive
How are comas/consciousness measured?
Glasgow Coma Scale
What are the three categories of the GCS?
Eye opening (E) Motor response (M) Verbal response (V)
What are the four levels of eye opening in GCS?
Spontaneous- 4
To speech- 3
To pain- 2
No response- 1
What are the six levels of motor response in GCS?
Obeys- 6 Localises- 5 Withdraws- 4 Flexion- 3 Extension- 2 No response- 1
What are the five levels of verbal response in GCS?
Orientation- 5 Confused conversation- 4 Inappropriate words- 3 Incomprehensible sounds- 2 No response- 1
What are the three broad things that can cause a coma?
Diffuse brain dysfunction
Direct effect within the brainstem
Pressure effect on the brain stem
Give some examples of Diffuse brain dysfunction.
Anything that depresses function- metabolic or toxic etc
Give some examples of Direct effect within the brainstem.
Brain stem lesion
Give some examples of Pressure effect on the brain stem
Mass lesion- tumor, bleed etc
