Progesterones Flashcards
Micronized progesterone
Class: Natural progesterone
Mechanism of action: Binds to PR, decreased first pass metabolism and increased dissolution due to micronization
Therapeutic uses: contraception and hormone replacement therapy
Toxicities: Fatigue and drowsiness
Other: Contraindicated in: thrombotic event or history of one liver disease undiagnosed vaginal bleeding pregnancy (causes atrophy of uterus causing birth defects)
Transvaginal progesterone
Class: Natural progesterone
Mechanism of action: Binds to PR, vaginal gel that has uterine effects without first pass metabolism and minimal systemic SEs
Therapeutic uses: contraception and hormone replacement therapy
Toxicities: Fatigue and drowsiness
Other: Contraindicated in: thrombotic event or history of one liver disease undiagnosed vaginal bleeding pregnancy (causes atrophy of uterus causing birth defects)
Medroxyprogesterone
Class: Synthetic progesterone
Mechanism of action: Binds to PR
Therapeutic uses: contraception and hormone replacement therapy
Toxicities: edema, bloating, and less commonly strong androgenic effects (hirsuitism, acne)
Also anxiety, irritability, depression, muscle pain, increased likelihood of thrombotic event (PE)
Other: Contraindicated in: thrombotic event or history of one liver disease undiagnosed vaginal bleeding pregnancy (causes atrophy of uterus causing birth defects)
Norethindrone
