Estradiol (valerate, cypionate)
Class: Estradiol esters (steroidal)
Mechanism of action: Absorbed via skin, mucus membranes, GI tract. Body Wide distribution via SHBG.
Therapeutics: Contraception, Primary Hypogonadism, Post-menopausal Hormone Replacement Therapy
Toxicities: Weight gain, Hypertension, Increased likelihood of breast, cervical, endometrial cancer. Increased likelihood of thrombotic event.
Also will cause nausea, breast pain, vaginal bleeding, headache
Contraindications: Breast/endometrial cancer, endometriosis, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, pregnancy, thrombotic disease, hypertension, liver disease, family history of breast cancer, endometrial cancer.
