Actions

A

Acts on several neurotransmitter systems:
1. anti dopamine actions
2. alpha-adrenergic antagonism
3. potentiates noradrenaline
4. weak anticholinergic and antihistamine effects
5. weak serotonin antagonism
Onset IM: limited data
Duration IM: limited data - likely to be prolonged

A

For the treatment (only) of nausea and vomiting from a variety of vestibular causes, including motion sickness, migraine, vertigo and labyrinthitis.

Adverse Effects

A
  1. Nervous system: drowsiness, extrapyramidal symptoms’
  2. Respiratory: respiratory depression
  3. Cardiovascular: hypotension, ECG changes (especially QT prolongation)
  4. Gastrointestinal: constipation, dry mouth

Contraindications

A

KCSNPNP
1. Known hypersensitivity to phenothiazines
2. CNS depression
3. Shock from any cause or other circulatory compromise
4. Not for use in pregnancy
5. Paediatric patients <18yrs
6. Not to be given in conjunction with intravenous amiodarone
7. Previous oral prochlorperazine within last 8 hours.

  1. Renal Dysfunction
  2. Parkinson’s disease
  3. Myasthenia gravis
  4. Epilepsy
  5. Caution in elderly - increased risk of dystonic reactions
