Actions
- Broad spectrum antibiotic - especially effective against gram-negative bacteria (eg. meningococcus)
- Effective crossing the blood-brain barrier

Use
Suspected meningococcal disease, in acutely ill patients

Adverse Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions (not common)
- Diarrhoea
- Skin rash

Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Precautions
It is possible that 20% patients with a penicillin allergy may be sensitive to ceftriaxone
Special note: an incident reports should be submitted to CGU in administered.

Dose
Adult and Paed:
50mg/kg, to a total of 2g - IV preferred.
make up to 10ml with normal saline - give slowly over 2-4mins.
May be administered IM - give two injections if dose over 1g (i.e. over 3ml volume)
