Droperidol
Actions
Droperidol is an antipyschotic and a tranquiliser. It gives no analgesia and no amnestic effects.
Acts on several neurotransmitters: antipsychotic actions are thought to be mediated by dopamine blockade.
Onset of action: IM 3-10mins; peak action up to 30min; durations 2-4hrs

Pharmacological intervention for combative/agitated patients.

Adverse Effects
MEAN
1. May lower seizure threshold
2. Extrapyramidal effects (rare)
3. Arrhythmias, including prolonged QT interval or torsades do pointes (all patients receiving droperidol must have ECG monitoring)
4. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (rare)

Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity
- Parkinson’s disease
- Post ictal

Precautions
Patients in severe pain, analgesia should also be provided

Dose
Adult (>14years):
10mg via IM injection only (no IV/IO use) Repeat once, after 10-15mins, if
required
Frail/elderly (>65years):
5mg via IM injection only (no IV/IO use). Repeat once, after 10-15mins, if required
