Actions
- Decrease pain perception and anxiety
- Vasodilation
Onset IV =2-5mins; IM =5+ mins
Durations IV = 1-2hrs; IM = 2-3hrs

To relieve moderate to severe pain

HBRAND
1. Hypotension
2. Bradycardia
3. Respiratory depression
4. Altered level of consciousness
5. Nausea and vomiting
6. Dependence

2 lungs 1 heart
1. Respiratory depression
2. BP <70mmHg systolic
3. Acute asthma attacks

Precautions
3 ages, 3 H’s, 3 acronyms
1. Children under 1 years
2. Elderly patients (may be sensitive)
3. Pain management during labour
4. Hypovolaemic patients (hypovolaemia should be corrected before morphine administration)
5.Patients with a SBP 70-90mmHg
6. known hypersensitivity
7. Patients with CAL
8. Depressed LOC
9. Previous opiates

Dose IV
Adult and Paed
Up to 0.05mg/kg IV, over 2 mins. may be repeated at 5 minute intervals, until pain is managed. AP max of 20mg.
Use with caution under 1 year of age.

Dose SBP 70-90mmHg
Adult only
IV use only
hypovolaemic patients must be receiving fluid
Up to half of a calculated 0.05mg/kg dose, given slowly.
May be repeated as required, with great care and with an appropriate time interval between doses, titrated to response.
No further doses to be given if SBP drops 10mmHg or more with the half dose, even if it remains above 70mmHg.
