non emergency surgery that is medically necessary, but can be delayed by 24 hours
what is emergency surgery?
undertaking surgical procedures at any time or day in patients whom it is medically necessary
what does NCEPOD mean?
national confidential enquiry into patients outcome and death
what does NCEPOD do?
protects patients by allocating resources
out of hours, non elective surgery
communication with theatre and anaesthetic staff
What are the categories of NCEPOD?
immediate- life or limb saving
urgent- intervention for acute onset or clinical deterioration
expedited- patient requiring early treatment wherre condition is not immediate threat to life or limb
elective- planned
What occurs when clerking a patient?
basic cardiovascular and respiratory exam
vital signs recorded
pre op bloods
who should marking be carried out by?
the operating surgeon
