PRELIM 03 - Granules Flashcards
Are agglomerates of powdered materials; provides a pleasant vehicle for selected drugs with bitter and salty taste
Granules
2 methods of granule preparation
Wet granulation, Dry granulation
2 methods of wet granulation
Basic wet method, Fluid bed processing
Involves moistening the powder, passing the paste through a screen, placing it in drying trays, and drying it under heat to create granules (Methods of wet granulation)
Basic wet method
Forms granules or pellets; particles in conical piece of equipment are dispersed and suspended (Methods of wet granulation)
Fluid bed processing
Nmt 60% thru a No. 40 sieve (USP standard for drugs and chemical powders)
Coarse (No. 20 sieve), Moderately coarse (No. 40 sieve)
No limit to greater fineness (USP standard for drugs and chemical powders)
Fine (No. 80 sieve), Very fine (No. 120 sieve)
Other name for dry granulation
Dry method, Fusion method
Method where a dry powder is passed through a roller compactor and then through a granulating machine (Methods of granule preparation)
Dry granulation
Also known as a roll press or roller compactor; processes a find powder into dense sheets or forms
Roll compactor
Process that involves compression of a powder or powder mixture under 8000-1200 pounds of pressure
Slugging
Products of slugging; are flat faced and about 2.5 cm (1 in) in diameter
Slugs
Refers to the science of small particles
Micromeritics
