What is the mechanism of action of Predisone?
●Prodrug metabolised to Presnisolone by the liver.
What are the indications of Prednisone?
●Bronchospasm associated with asthma or COPD.
●Croup.
●Prominent itch associated with Anaphylaxis provided all systemic signs of Anaphylaxis has resolved.
●Minor allergy associated with a rash.
What are the contraindications of Prednisone?
●Known severe allergy.
What are the cautions of Prednisone?
●Aged less than 5 years with asthma. Administer if there is a clear history of asthma and they have had Prednisone/Presnisolone previously.
What is the adult oral dose of Prednisone?
●40mg. (Administer if patient is taking a lower dose. Advise to stop taking their own dose of Prednisone and to follow up with a GP for a dose review.)
What are the side effects of Prednisone?
●Fatigue.
●Sodium/water retention. (Prolonged use may worsen Hypertension and heart failure.)
●GI reflux.
