What is the mechanism of action of Ibuprofen?
●Non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for treating pain.
●Inhibits (blocks) the activity of the enzyme prostaglandin synthetase, reducing prostaglandin production reducing inflammation, pain, and fever.
What are the indications of Ibuprofen?
●Mild to moderate pain, usually in combination with paracetamol.
●Moderate to severe pain, usually in combination with other medicines.
What are the contraindications of Ibuprofen?
●Known severe allergy.
●Pregnancy. (Causes foetal harm during pregnancy.
Premature closure of the ductus arteriososus in 3rd trimester.)
●Sepsis, shock, or clinically significant bleeding.
●Known worsening of bronchospasm.
What are the cautions for Ibuprofen?
●Taken within last 4 hours.
●Abdominal pain (risk of intra-abdominal pathology).
●75 years old or greater (renal impairment is likely).
What is the adult dose of Ibuprofen?
600mg for weight over 80kgs.
400mg for weight under 80kgs.
What are the side effects of Ibuprofen?
●Increased bleeding.
●Renal impairment.
●GI ulcers or GI bleed. (Associated with long term use.)
