Pre-release Flashcards
What are oncogenes
Genes that code for the transition of one stage in the cell cycle to the next
-ve epigenetic changes can lead to excessive cell division
What are tumour suppressor genes?
Are genes that produce suppressor proteins to stop the cell cycle
-ve if mutated can cause cell cycle to be continous
How did WW discover right dosage?
Gradually increased dosage. Until patients reacted badly. Then decreased it slightly
What is the point of Phase I in a clinical trial?
Test for side effects. Use a small number of healthy people
What is the point of Phase II in a clinical trial?
Use patients and double blind trials. Compare effectiveness
What is the point of Phase III in a clinical trial?
Larger sample size. Double blind. Compare to existing treatment
Describe how a safe dosage of cancer drug could be determined
Test on healthy people
Then test on cancer patients
Increase dosage until there are significant side effects
Why is ATP required for glycolysis?
Provide energy
For reaction to occur
Provide phosphate for phosphorylation to make GALP
