Practice exam questions- Geography Flashcards
Describe what is meant by continental drift.
How the continents were, 250 million years ago, one large super continent named Pangea that eventually, (thanks to convection currents) was pulled horizontally apart.
Identify one piece of evidence that the continental drift theory is correct. Explain how this indicates the plates are moving.
The continents fit together like a jigsaw puzzle however, convection currents separated them.
What is the name given to the supercontinent?
Pangea
When did Pangea exist?
250 million years ago.
What is a drainage basin? (2 marks)
A river basin / drainage basin is an area of land in which all flowing surface water converges to a single point, such as a river mouth, or flows into another body of water, such as a lake or ocean.
What will happen to water that lands on the watershed?
It will run down into the main river channel and towards the mouth of the river.
What would happen to most of the water if the rock type in the drainage basin is impermeable?
Surface runoff would occur and it would join the large river channel in the basin.
What would happen to water in the drainage basin if it was covered by a large forest?
Most of the water would be intercepted and transpired before it hits the ground and can infiltrate.
In what country did Mt. Nyiragongo erupt in 2002?
The DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo)
What do you usually get at a collision boundary?
Mountains/fold mountains
What is the definition of a natural disaster?
a natural event such as a flood, earthquake, or hurricane that causes great damage or loss of life.
Is the DRC a developed country? Explain your reasoning.
E.g. No because in the Nyiragongo eruption, the DRC had to rely heavily on search and rescue support, as well as supplies. Many more people were displaced than that possibly of a developed country.
What date did Eyjafjallajokull erupt?
20 March 2010
