2
Q

If a FADEC 1A Fail caution light illuminates, does the engine quit or go into over speed?

A

No. Complete loss of a single FADEC channel will not degrade engine performance.

3
Q

If a FADEC 1A and 1B caution light illuminated, would the engine continue to operate?

A

No- Loss of both FADEC Channels on a single engine will cause that engine to fail.

Q

How is the FADEC powered?

A

Powered by the engine alternator as the primary source
Helicopter 28 vdc power is used as a backup source in case of alternator failure. Battery bus for Chan A and #1 DC Primary for Chan B

6
Q

In extreme flight situations, is it possible to get more power from the engine (exceed 5 minute power) during AEO

A

Engine and main gear box protection features are built into the FADEC to prevent the pilot from exceeding posted limits. These limits can be shifted upwards via the “blow away” logic when additional power is required in extreme flight situations. AEO- Tq 100% to 120%, NP/Nr 100 – 95% : TQ 120 -140, NP/NR 93- 88%

Q

What is a Engine Power Assurance Check and when is it required?

A
  1. It confirms that published performance is assured.
  2. The power assurance check will be accomplished once each day.
  3. It can be completed on the ground or in flight
  4. If in flight, the airspeed must be stabilized above 80 KIAS

8
Q

Explain the main engine starter system.

A
  1. A Pneumatic starter mounted on the accessory gear box of each engine.
  2. It uses pneumatic air from the APU, opposite engine if it is running, or an external source to power the starter.
  3. The pilot can select the bleed air source by use of the air source heat start switch

9
Q

If attempting an air restart with the number 1 engine operating, the APU on and the Air source heat start switch in the Eng position, what provides the pneumatic air for engine restart?

A
  1. APU if the operating engine TQ is less than approximately 80%
  2. The operating engine if the operating engine TQ is approximately 80% TQ or greater

10
Q

If a cross bleed start was used, would the start sequence cause the operating engine to lose available power?

A

Yes, use of engine cross bleed will result in a loss of up to 3% power of the operating engine.

Q

Can a pilot start both engines simultaneously? Are there any limitations?

A

Both engines may be started simultaneously when the OAT is below 25C at sea level. Decrease allowable OAT 2C per thousand feet of altitude.

Q

During engine start, what action should be taken in the case of a hot start? Does FADEC provide hot start prevention in all start situations?

A
  1. With the engine throttle in idle during the start sequence- Hot start prevention is provided
  2. With the engine throttle in fly during the start sequence- Hot start prevention is not provided.
  3. Max TGT during engine start is 1000 C.

16
Q

Which stages have variable geometry?

A

The inlet guide vanes and the #1 & 2 stages are variable geometry

17
Q

Axial stages of compressor?
How many Fuel nozzles?
How many ignitors?
How many thermocouples?
How many chip detectors per engine

A

Axial stages of compressor? 5
How many Fuel nozzles? 12
How many ignitors? 2
How many thermocouples? 7 (4 - Chan A & 3 - Chan B)
How many chip detectors per engine. 1

18
Q

How is Fuel flow calculated?

A

Fuel flow is a FADEC derived value based on Main metering valve position in the FMU. FADEC sends a signal through the DCU

19
Q

What overspeed protection is provided by the FADEC?

A

If NP increases to 120% or NG increases to 108.5%, The FADEC commands the Overspeed valve to shut off fuel to the manifold. This causes the engine to ‘shutdown’ and as NP spools down to 118% the O/S valve reopens. The engine may spool back up to overspeed limits repeating the cycle until secured by the pilot.
If the NP is at 120% but the NR remains at 105% (high speed shaft fail) then the overspeed valve will not reopen and the Engine will shut down

20
Q

What limitations must be observed when starting both engines against the rotor brake?

A

If using the rotor brake for start, ensure a minimum pressure of 450 psi is set on the Brake.
After releasing the brake, the pilot must wait for 1 minute prior to advancing the throttles past idle
