What is the purpose of having an MEL?

A

To allow you to operate an aircraft with selected equipment inoperative.

Must an MEL be approved before use or can you just make one up?

A

All MEL’s must be approved by the local FSDO and a letter of authorization is attached to it. The MEL and Letter of authorization constitute a supplemental type certificate for the aircraft.
