POWER- OTHER Flashcards
plyometrics scientific reasoning
-mechanical model
-neurophysiological model
^these add power because our muscle spindle is causing a stretch reflex where we get added contraction of that muscle + our muscle has kinetic energy basically from stretching itself out
mechanical model
-elastic energy in musculotendinous components is increased with rapid stretch then restored
-when the stretch is immediately followed by concentric contraction, the stored elastic energy is released in form of kinetic energy
-series elastic component (SEC) is the workhouse of plyometrics
-SEC contains tendons, muscles, + other CT
-think of sprint or rubber band when thinking about mechanical model
neurophysiological model
-involves potentiation (change in force-velocity characteristics of muscle’s contractile components caused by stretch)
-stretch reflex is the body’s involuntary response to external stimulus that stretches the muscles (muscle spindle activity)
-muscle spindle activation is increased during eccentric component
-plyometrics is most likely result of both components
heavy resistance benefit
increases overall force production shifting the force velocity curve to the right
-power increases as a result
ballistic benefit
causes rate coding increases, muscle recruitment patterns change, muscle synchronization improvements
-characterized by continual acceleration throughout concentric rather than slowing to a stop before returning to start position
olympic benefit
causes combination of improvements seen from resistance + ballistic training
plyometrics benefit
improves the storage + utilization of elastic energy, interactions of contractile + elastic elements, potentiation of contractile + elastic filaments, increases stretch reflexes produced by muscle spindles
-amortization: pause between phase 1 + 2; most important aspect of plyometrics; amortization should be as SHORT as possible
how to calculate volume for plyometrics
volume is measured by foot contacts
-ex: box jump
-any time you have impact on the ground it is a foot contact; if it’s a 1 legged plyometric then you only get 1 foot contact per rep; if it’s a double-legged then you must double the foot contacts
**ex: 3x8 exercise landing on 2 feet -> this is 48 foot contacts for volume
