Health and Wellness
Defined as lifestyle, environment, human biology, and the organization of health care.
Health Determinants
This health field concept was widely used, modified, and expanded by other countries, and its release was a turning point in broadening Canadians’ attitudes about factors that contribute to health, along with the role of government in promoting health.
Health Determinants
This health approach emphasizes the use of epidemiological data to determine the etiology of health and disease.
Population
Defined as the economic and social conditions that shape the health of individuals, communities, and jurisdictions as a whole and determine the extent to which a person possesses the physical, social, and personal resources to identify and achieve personal aspirations, satisfy needs, and cope with the environment.
Social Determinants of Health
Differences in health status among different population groups.
Health Disparities
Associated with inequitable access (unfair or unjust lack of access) to health determinants resulting from economic and social policies.
Health Disparities
A related but distinct concept that has evolved from an initial focus on functional literacy reading and math ability needed in everyday life to an expanded focus that includes interactive and critical literacy.
Health Literacy
As a progression from functional literacy, this literacy reflects advanced ability to apply new information to changing circumstances.
Interactive
This literacy reflects further advanced ability to critically analyze information and to apply this information to exert greater control over life events and situations.
Critical
The limited or uncertain availability of nutritious foods.
Food Insecurity
Prolonged activation of stress response systems in the body and brain.
Toxic Stress
Universality, portability, accessibility, comprehensiveness, and public administration are principles of this act.
Canada Health
An ideology that either directly or indirectly asserts that one group is inherently superior to others.
Racism
The process by which societies construct races as real, different, and unequal in ways that matter to economic, political, and social life.
Racialization
The array of values and norms of a society that influence in varying ways the health and well-being of populations.
