Insertion: tubercles of transverse processes of C1-C3 or C4
Innervation: Posterior rami of spinal nerves
Splenius Capitis
Origin: Nuchal ligament and spinous processes of C7-T3/4
Insertion: Fibers run superolaterally to mastoid process of temporal bone and lateral third of superior nuchal line of occipital bone
Innervation: posterior rami of spinal nerves
Rectus Capitus Posterior Major
Origin: Spinous process of C2
Insertion: Lateral part of the inferior nuchal line of occipital bone
Innervation: Suboccipital nerve (C1)
Rectus Capitus Posterior Minor
Origin: Posterior tubercle on the posterior arch of C1
Insertion: Medial third of the inferior nuchal line
Innervation: Suboccipital nerve (C1)
Obliquus Capitus Inferior
Origin: Spinous process of C2

Innervation: Suboccipital nerve (C1)
Obliquus Capitus Superior
Origin: Transverse process of C1
Insertion: Occipital bone between superior and inferior nuchal lines
Innervation: Suboccipital nerve (C1)
Platysma
Origin (superior): Inferior border of mandible, skin, and subcutaneous tissues of lower face
Insertion (inferior): Facia covering superior parts of pectoralis major and deltoid muscles
Innervation: Cervical branch of facial nerve (CN VII)
Sternocleidomastoid
Origin (superior) : Lateral surface of mastoid process of temporal bone and lateral half of superior nuchal line
Insertion (inferior): (sternal head) anterior surface of manubrium of sternum; (clavicular head) superior surface of medial third of clavicle
Innervation: Spinal accessory nerve (CN XI, motor), C2 and C3 nerves (pain and proprioception)
