Arm Flashcards
What are the three muscles in the anterior compartment of the arm and what innervates them?
Biceps brachii, brachialis, and coracobrachialis. All innervated by the musculocutaneous nerve.
Only movements of the arm
Flexion, Extension, Pronation, Supination
What is the muscle of the posterior compartment and what innervates it?
Triceps brachii. Radial Nerve
What does the anconeus muscle do?
It helps the triceps extend the forearm and also abducts the ulna during pronation of the forearm.
What is Popeye Deformity?
When the long head of the biceps tears from its attachment to the supraglenoid tubercle of the scapula and forms a ball near the center of the distal part of the anterior arm.
What is the Bicipital Myotatic Reflex?
A routine muscle spindle test where the arm is supinated and the bicipital tendon is firmly held down and then struck to observe a response. A positive response indicates an intact musculocutaneous nerve whereas a prolonged response indicates central or peripheral NS disease.
What is the clinical sign of radial nerve injury?
Wrist drop. The extensors of the wrist cannot overcome gravity and the tonus of the flexors.
What is Ischemic Compartment Syndrome (Volkmann ischemic contracture)?
When a laceration occurs on the brachial artery, scar tissue can form and cause the involved muscles to shorted permanently, producing a flexion deformity.
What is the cubital fossa?
A shallow triangular depression on the anterior surface of the elbow.
What are the boundaries of the cubital fossa?
Superiorly=> an imaginary line connecting the medial and lateral epicondyles
Medially=> pronator teres
Laterally=> brachioradialis
What forms the floor of the cubital fossa?
- ) Brachialis
2. ) Supinator
What forms the roof of the cubital fossa?
- ) Continuity of the brachial and antebrachial fascia
- ) Bicipital aponeurosis
- ) Subcutaneous tissue and skin
What are the contents of the cubital fossa?
- ) Brachial, radial, and ulnar arteries
- ) The accompanying veins of the arteries
- ) Biceps brachii tendon
- ) Median nerve
- ) Radial nerve
- superficial and deep branches
What are the boundaries of the Triceps Hiatus?
- Teres Major
- Long head Triceps
- Humerus
What are the contents of the Triceps Hiatus?
- Deep artery of arm
- Radial nerve
