Posioning/Allergic Reaction Flashcards
What is the care for a patient that has ingested poison?
- Detect/treat immediate life threats
- Secondary assessment
- baseline vitals
- med director - poison control
- provide instructed care
- transport w all evidence
- reassess on route
What is the proper care for absorbed poison?
some poisons will absorb with no trace, others will mangle the skin
prevent exposure to self, and do not allow any contaminants into hospital
Care
- detect any life threats (primary), prompt transport considerations
- perform secondary - vitals, remove contaminated clothing
- remove poison by
-powder ~ brush excess off
-liquid ~ irrigate with water for 20 mins, continue en route if possible - grab any evidence and transport
What are some of the Commonly Ingested Potions?
-Antihistamine
-Antipsychotics
-Aspirin
-Food (contamination)
-Acetaminophen
-Acids/Alkalis
-Antidepressant

What are the 4 types of ways to be poisoned?
absorbed: poisons taken into body through unbroken skin
inhaled: breathed in
ingested: swallowed
injected: heated and injected, bites, stings
difference between poison and toxins
poison: any substance that harms body by altering cell structure or functions
Toxins - a poison secreted by bacteria plants or animals
