Porpertius 22 Flashcards
Cnossian; Andromeda; Thracian
in lines 1-6 there are three examples of woman sleeping but not very appropriate; Cnossian is refference to Ariadne; Thracian is refference to the Baccus worshipers
How does this compare to Cynthia
When deep in wine I dragged my footsteps in as the slaves shook up the late-night torches
We imagine the scene- he has gone out on the razzle dazzle she is furious about it when he returns late at night
I, not yet quite totally deprived of all my senses, endeavoured softly to go to her dinted bed
He wants to creep in unnoticed
goaded with double fire
one fire with love and the other of wine
furious objurgations
Cynthia is very angry
riveted eyes
He stood staring at her
garland
epithet of drunken lover- not door post this time
and now I joyed to arrange your straying locks and covertly place apples in your hands
Imagine the scene of him playing with her hair and giving her gifts- apple- symbol of love
the gifts that rolled profuse from my leaning breast
he is trying to sway her
empty apprehension lest visions brought you unaccustomed dread
doesn’t want to wake her up and doesnt want her to think that she is being raped
But then the moon, fleeting past the open shutters, the officious moon, whose light would linger, opened with gentle beams your eyes becalmed.
this shows idillic and romantic nature of their relationship
Her elbow propped in the soft bed, then she said
seems she is giong to be glad to see him
Cnossian
refference to Ariadne who was deserted by Theseus, as Cynthia was deserted by Propertius
Andromeda
she sleeps with intense suffering
Thracian
A refference to Baccus worshipers who would sleep after exertion of her dance. Cynthia tried to bring on sleep by singing but Bacchantes like Cynthia were notoriously vicious when woken
