Population and the Environement:CASE STUDY:Zonal Soils Flashcards
two zonal soils
latosol
podsol
location of latosols
around the equator in the tropics
characteristics of latosols
rich in aluminium and iron oxides-gives it a red colour
very deep 30-40m
a lot of decaying vegetation and humus is quickly absorbed by other vegetation
agricultural use of latosols
poor for agriculture as humus is not left in soil
shifting cultivation farming technique-allows soil to recover
chernozems location
in the Northern hemisphere Russia and Northern America
chernozems characteristics
-rich in an organic matter called humus
-naturally fertile from high phosphorus and nitrogen content
-natural grasslands
chernozem agricultural uses
-Clay-like structure makes soil good for ploughing
-Crops can be grown throughout the year as there are enough nutrients
-usually used for multiple harvests
